Old Testament- the Children of Israel

In Exodus 19, the Lord tells Moses that he wants the children of Israel to be a peculiar people and to stand above the people of the world. That means that he wants us to remember that we are his children and beloved by him, therefore we are held to a higher standard of living and of spirituality. Our righteousness is meant to not only save us and bring us to heaven, but it is used as an example of those in the world. They can see that there is a better way to live when they watch us and see that we love the Lord more than our sins or things of material value etc. We live in a “holy nation” and therefore need to live up to our birth right by honoring the priesthood and all the covenants that we made with God.
The Lord promised the people that if they lived righteously, keeping themselves clean above the wickedness of the worldly people and sins, and then he would show himself to them on Mount Sinai. This applies to us because if we follow the prophets and live righteously, keeping our sights on the Lord, then he too will show himself to us. He will show himself to us through the teachings of the spirit, the blessings he will bestow upon us and eventually when the Second Coming comes. But we don’t have to physically see the Lord for him to show himself to us, we need to see him with our hearts by keeping our eyes, mind and spirits focused upon him. (265)
