What are Judges?

How are the Judges in Judges 3:16-18 different from the judges we have today and what would be a good synonym for the word judge?

In this section of reading I gathered that the judges were like messengers and protectors for God. The heading of the ‘choice’ says, ‘the Lord raised them up a deliverer”. So a good synonym for the word judge would be messanger. The man had a dagger and killed the wicked fat king of Moab. This is definitely different than the judges we have today, but there are some parallels. I would say that our bishops, priesthood leaders, civil officers/judges are like messengers of truth and justice. Bishops are here to help us through problems because we can’t all have God here to help us with the repentance process physically. They are called to bring out the truth and the right way, so that we can have peace and honest dealings in our lives and around us. Just like the judges of the old testament.
